It’s not often we are able to buy full brothers to multiple group winners nor is it the norm for you to be able to buy shares into, especially when they have proven their ability with a career best on their last run.
Stanage is a gelded son of Kingman out of a the mare Helleborine which makes him a full brother to Calyx, the Coventry Stakes and Pavilion Stakes winner as well as Sandringham Stakes winner, Coppice who would go on to the Rosemary Stakes and finish second to Chili Flag in the grade two Distaff Turf Mile earlier this year.
He was picked up for 28,000gns which looks exceptional value given the strength of the trade for these top tier horses who were in form and more importantly, in grand physical shape.
It was a rather large Juddmonte draft which consisted mainly of well bred 3yos who just haven’t quite made that stakes level…. Yet!
Our source at Juddmonte informed us that this lad has always shown tons of ability at home but he hasn’t been the most straightforward to train and he had plenty of “character”.
That delayed his debut until his 3yo season and he kept some good company throughout his novice runs earlier this year including two starts to Doncaster with the latter coming in June over seven furlongs with 110 and 104 rated animals just finishing ahead of him.
All four runs pre gelding operation brought about some improvement with the latter coming in a very valuable novice heat at Windsor, he was beaten just a neck with the third horse six lengths back, despite being very keen early in the race, the final straw before his gelding operation.
He reappeared after the operation at Newcastle where he was turned over at fairly short odds, we where informed that this substandard performance was possibly not to the horse feeling the after affects of his operation and he was a little sore after the race, he certainly runs like something was bothering him!
His work since that run has been extremely good and that was replicated onto the track on his last start when he was a comprehensive winner at Chelmsford in a decent time without having to be asked too many questions.
That run saw his mark increased to 86 with both RPR and Timeform rating the run in the 90’s!
He looks a sure thing for a spot in the £150k mile handicap on all weather finals days should we opt to go down that route but providing there’s good in the going description, he’s going to run at Doncaster this Saturday in a £25k handicap over seven furlongs, the scene of two of his impressive novice runs.
Should he run well as expected, we’ll likely put him away for the 2025 season and he’ll be a hugely exciting horse to go to war with in some big handicap throughout the year.
He’ll join Michael & David Easterby who have enjoyed another good season and have been excellent with their communication and updates since our first horse landed there.
