Excellent physical with the pedigree to match!
This filly was right at the very top of our list of fillies who we thought would be buyable and had an exceptional physical make up. By Kodiac, she’s the full sister to the very smart stakes performer, Alaskan Gold who finished 2nd in the Prospect stakes at Doncaster and was only beaten just over a length in the group three, Greenham Stakes as a three year old.
It was music to our ears that this filly was also on the shopping list of the Burke’s which could have been expected given they trained Alaskan Gold throughout his two year old campaign and we couldn’t think of a better place for the filly to be trained than Spigot Lodge.
Why was she buyable? Nick saw her twice and loved her on both occasions, passing his strict physical assessment but she isn’t the biggest, currently standing at 15 hands. That would put some off and if she was 15’3 she would have made over a 250k without any questions. Given she is a May foal, there will be physical development to follow and a combination of the two probably put any breeze up consignors off her.
Walking in the ring, we had band “B” money in our head which is anything below 66,000gns but we opted to bid online to disclose our identity and as so often has been the case this season, we managed to secure her for far less than we expected, paying just 48,000gns.
Kodiac needs very little introduction and this fillies pedigree speaks for itself.
Only one horse out of the mare hasn’t won a race and that still achieved an RPR of 82, with six of the eight producing an RPR of 82 or more including two horse’s who would achieve blacktype. As mentioned above, the full brother Alaskan Gold is the most successful horse out of the mare with a peak RPR of 104 after his 200k price tag at the breeze ups. Waddat is another successful full brother, he won three of his five starts for Richard Hughes over sprint trips before being sold to race abroad.
The Kodiac x Fantastic Light cross is another big tick in the box with seven of the eight crosses providing a winner and this filly looks to have everything she needs to continue that excellent record!
Given the pedigree, the plan has to be simple for this filly… Blacktype!
Should we achieve blacktype with this filly, she will be worth a small fortune given the strength of her pedigree and proven record of her sire.
She is very likely to be one of our first runners of the 2025 season and we’ll be working towards races like the Lily Agnes, Marygate and Woodcote Stakes in the early parts of her juvenile season.
Karl is obviously no stranger to sending horses to France and there’s several options over the channel that would present us with an excellent opportunity to pick up some early season black type in races such as the Yacowlef, Fleche and Prix Des Reves D’or all run over the minimum trip before the end of June.
Spigot Lodge continues to attract some of the biggest owners in the country to train their juveniles so it is a real coup when Karl is confident enough to take a considerable share in one of our fillies, just like he has with this one.
Given she qualifies for the IRE Incentive, we’ll look to bag a qualifying maiden early in the season with reward her owners with a €10,000 bonus on top of any prize money before targeting some of the races listed above.
We would highly recommend this filly based on the large upsides and considerable broodmare value.
